I Want to Become a Driving Instructor – Here’s How

Tired of a boring 9-5 office job? Then a new career as a driving instructor could be a step in the right direction. However, you can’t simply get behind the wheel of dual controlled vehicles and start the search for pupils.

To teach pupils how to drive, you need to be a qualified ADI. This stands for Approved Driving Instructor. The training you need is referred to as driving instructor training and needs to be completed by a DVSA approved training provider.

Training Requirements

Before you enrol on a driving instructor training course, remember to read through the breakdown of requirements before you apply. If you fail to meet the training criteria or requirements, you wont be able to complete a course.

Traditionally, ADI training pupils need to meet the following:

• Be at least 21-years old
• Hold a valid UK driving licence for 3-years or more
• Take a criminal records check (CRB/DBS)
• Complete the required part 1, 2 and 3 training
• Enrol on a training course with an approved instructor/school

As a qualified instructor, you’ll be able to teach pupils to drive a category B vehicle that is a standard car. If you want to teach pupils to drive larger vehicles and additional categories, you will need to undergo further training.

Common additional training includes trailer training and caravan towing.
